Bernice Lee McDaniel Hammonds, age 86 years, a resident of Huttonsville, WV departed this life Sunday morning May 12, 2013 at the Davis Memorial Hospital in Elkins. She had been in declining health for the past year.
She was born Monday, March 21, 1927 at Elkins, WV a daughter of the late George Washington and Artie Marie Ryder McDaniel. On December 22, 1944 at Baltimore, MD she was married to Arthur A. Hammonds, who preceded her in death October 24, 2005. Surviving are three sons, Jack A. Hammonds, Mill Creek; John A Hammonds and wife Debra, Martinsburg; Dennis L. Hammonds, Chester, MD; three daughters, Angie F. Hammond; and Terry L. Hammonds, both of Pasadena, MD; Sandra K. Swayze and husband George “Jud”, Silverdale, WA; eight grandchildren, Jimmy; John; Scott; Crystal; Kristin; Brett; Kyle; and Tammy and seven great grandchildren, James; Ashley; Taylor; Emma; Kelsey; Blake; and Preston.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Preceding her in death are one son, Vince Hammonds; one brother, George W. Smith; and three sisters, Velva Mason; Joanne Antoline; and Lillian Kessler.
She was a graduate of Elkins High School, was a homemaker and a member of the Tygart Valley Baptist Church at Beverly. She was an avid bowler, enjoyed gardening and taking care of her family.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 5 to 8 PM, Thursday. Final Rites will be conducted at the funeral home, Friday, May 17, 2013 at 11:30 AM. The Rev. Jack Howell will officiate and interment will follow at the Mouse Cemetery at Cravensdale, WV.
