OPAL VESTA WARNER BENNETT, age 91 years, a resident of Beverly, WV departed this life Thursday afternoon, October 17, 2013 at the Elkins Rehabilitation & Care Center at Elkins.
She was born Sunday, October 30, 1921 at the Hunting Grounds in Cherry Grove, Pendleton County, WV a daughter of the late Amby and Surrilda Waybright Warner. On January 26, 1946, she was married to Maxwell Harding Bennett, who preceded her in death November 1, 2008. They had celebrated sixty eight years of marriage. Surviving are three sons, Maxwell “June” Harding Bennett, Michael Lynn Bennett and wife Margaret “Maggie” and Jeffrey Allan Bennett and wife Patricia, all of Dailey; one sister, Jessie Sponaugle and husband Cranston of Elkins; eight grandchildren, Clinton Bennett, Michael Bennett, II, Jeffrey Bennett, twins, Justin Paul Bennett and Julie Ann Supak, Anthony Chandler, William Chandler and Stephanie Miller; nine great grandchildren, Adryana, Corinne, Nyla, Eryn, Ivy, Hailey, Sawyer, Raven and David.
Preceding her in death are one daughter, Lois Lee Bennett; two brothers, Sam and Noah Warner and three sisters, Bessie and Peachie Warner and Leota “Sis” Arbaugh.
She was a graduate of Circleville High School, where she lettered in Basketball. She was a teacher in a one room school in Pendleton Co, worked at the former Reidboard Brothers, Beta Shoe Co., and was a cook for the Randolph County Board of Education and she was a homemaker and a noted cook. She was a devoted Christian. She was known as “The Colonel” by her family, and she was the most loving woman you would ever meet.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 5 to 8 PM, Saturday. Final Rites will be conducted at the funeral home, Sunday, October 20, 2013 at 1:30PM. The Rev. Dewaine Corley will officiate and interment will follow at the Mountain State Memorial Gardens at Gilman, WV.
