Albert Smith “Jack” Hockman Jr., 88, a resident of Parsons, departed this life early Wednesday morning, Dec. 23, 2020 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He had been in declining health.

He was born Monday Aug. 1, 1932 at Davis, a son of the late Albert Smith “Smitty” Hockman and Myrtle Morgart Hockman. On Feb. 26, 1955 at Red House, Maryland, he was married to the former Linda Beverly Pifer, who survives. They had celebrated 65 years of marriage.

Also surviving are two sons, Albert Smith “Jack” Hockman III and wife Scarlett of Martinsburg and Raymond Scott Hockman and wife Karen Jo of Holly Meadows; four daughters, Julie Lynn Hockman Hardesty and husband Philip Michael of Scott Depot, Sandra Ellen Hockman of Parsons, Dana Leigh Dean and husband David of Morgantown, and Karen Louise Goff and husband Dave of Blackman Flats; two brothers, David Lee “Dan” Hockman of Thomas and Richard Steven Hockman and wife Lois of Arizona; one sister, Brauna Sue Gabler and husband Ernest of Thomas; twenty grandchildren, Trey and wife Kim, Tyler and wife Emily, Taylor and fiance Corissa, Jordan Harris and husband Matt, Micah Hardesty, Jaden Hardesty, Daniel, Morgan and Alexandra Haller, Meredith, Victoria, and Joseph Dean, Jeremiah Dean and wife Adele, Josh Dean and wife Amanda, Billy Watson and wife Lauren, Molly Hanlon and husband Wayne and Olivia Pires and husband Victor, Aaron Goff and wife Merry Jo, Joshua Hockman and Emma Jo Hockman; twenty-three great-grandchildren; and several sweet nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death are one brother, Ronald “Pete” Hockman; and four sisters, Helen Louise Parks, Eloise Lambert, Margaret Kepner, and Carol Hockman.

He attended the schools of Davis, Thomas and Parsons and was a graduate of Parsons High School with the class of 1950. He was a decorated combat Veteran of the United States Army during the Korean Conflict, where he received two bronze stars and was part of the Nuclear Testing Program. In 1956 at the age of twenty-four, he was elected the youngest Sheriff in the State of West Virginia, serving as Sheriff of Tucker County until 1960.

He was a former employee of Columbia Gas, working for twenty-eight years, where he retired. He was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church at Parsons, a member of the Parsons Volunteer Fire Dept, Lions Club, the American Legion, the V.F.W., the former Odd Fellows, the former Moose Club. He had an excellent sense of humor.

The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons on Sunday, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. The Rev. Neil Parsons will officiate and interment will follow at the Pifer Dumire Cemetery at Location, where the H.W. Daniels Post #29 American Legion, the Tygart Valley Post #3647 Veterans of Foreign War and the Tucker Co. Veterans Assoc. will conduct full military honors.

As we continue to follow the CDC guidelines, masks and social distancing will be required.
