Allen Russell “Hambone” Mason, 68, a well known resident of the Brooklyn Heights community, Parsons, departed this life Tuesday afternoon, April 2, 2012, in Davis Memorial Hospital at Elkins.

He was born Monday, June 5, 1944, at Parsons, a son of the late Russell A. Mason and Armittie A. Collett Mason Sponaugle.

Surviving are one son, Joseph Allen Mason and wife, Brenda, of Parsons; one daughter, Joyce Ellen Lambruno and husband, Steven, of Cadiz, Ky.; four brothers, Burl Mason and wife, Sandy, of Hambleton, Lewis Sponaugle and wife, Reva, of Inwood, Greg Mason of Ohio, and Brian Sponaugle Jr. and wife, Dottie, of Pifer Mountain, St. George; four sisters, Patsy Mason Stone of Ohio, Naomi Sponaugle Lambert and husband, Harry, of Mabie, Wilda Sponaugle of Ohio, and Lulabelle Hardy of Hambleton; four grandchildren, Steven Lambruno of Parsons, Loupie Lambruno of Kentucky, Mitchell and Marcus Mason of Parsons; and one great-grandson, Hayden Lambruno of Kentucky; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.

Preceding him in death were one son, Thomas Allen Mason; three brothers, Cleon, Harold and Eugene Sponaugle; and two sisters, Martha Mason Whetzel and Lucy Sponaugle Tingler.

He attended Parsons High School, where he was a member of the football squad and was an outstanding punter and kicker. He was an employee of the former Dorman Mills. He was a farmer and a construction worker, and he retired as a mason for Consol Coal Co. He was a member of United Mine Workers Association and Pythagoras Lodge 128 A.F. & A.M. of Parsons. He was instrumental in laying the blocks for the Veteran’s Memorial Wall in downtown Parsons. “Hambone” loved life to the fullest. He was well known throughout the area for his famous pig roast, with his self-made special sauce. He enjoyed hunting, cooking and liked to watch westerns. “Hambone” loved to watch his grandsons play sports.

The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home parlor Saturday, April 6, at 11:30 a.m. Pastor Allen D. Crosten will officiate, and interment will follow in Parsons City Cemetery at Parsons, where Pythagoras Lodge 128 A.F. & A.M. will conduct Masonic graveside rites.
