Arnold Roy “Ziffle” Phillips Jr., 47, of Parsons, died Thursday morning, Feb. 14, 2002, at the home of his parents, Sockum and Cora Phillips. He had been in declining health and death was attributed to cancer.
Mr. Phillips was born Aug. 4, 1954, in Parsons, a son of Arnold Roy “Sockum” Phillips and Cora Ann Kelly Phillips, who survive.
On June 3, 2000, he married the formerly Patricia Lynn Pennington, who survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Matthew Roy Phillips and wife, Tara, Parsons, and David Ashley Phillips, Morgantown; two daughters, Samantha Renee Zais and husband, Todd, Parsons, and Diane Melanie Davis and husband, Justin, Parsons; a brother, Nathan Dale Phillips and wife, Alma, Parsons; a sister, Beverly Ann Rosier and husband, Robert “Bud”, Clover Run; and four grandchildren, Matthew David Phillips, Isabella Zais, Abigail Zais and Gabrielle Zais, all of Parsons.
Mr. Phillips was a 1973 graduate of Parsons High School, where he was a member of the football squad. He was a former employee of Kingsford Charcoal Company of which he was supervisor of manufacturing. He became a coal miner work for No. 1 and No. 2 Laurel Run Coal Mine as a faceman. He was a welder for Hinchcliff Lumber Co. for seven years and was a former employee of Ultilimax Manufacturing Co. of Baltimore, Md., and before his illness, he worked for Robison Run Mine No. 95 for Consol Coal Co. He was a member of the UMWA District 31 of Fairmont and local union 1829 of Thomas. He was a member of the IOOF Lodge 57 of Parsons. He attended Sugargrove Church in Mackeyville.
Funeral Arrangements: Friends will be received at Barb & Greenlief Funeral Home in Parsons on Saturday from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be in the funeral home parlor Sunday at 2 p.m. with Pastor Pat Cassidy officiating. Interment will follow in Parsons City Cemetery in Parsons.
