Betty Lou Reynolds Haynes, 82, was born in Spencer on Aug. 26, 1938, daughter of Earl and Juanita Reynolds.
Betty slipped away from this life on Friday, Nov. 27, 2020, at 11:25 a.m. surrounded by family after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.
Betty was a 1956 graduate of Spencer High School and married her best friend, Voras Haynes, in September 1959.
She worked as a telephone operator at C&P Telephone in Spencer, Morgantown and Logan.
She continued her service at the telephone company at Citizens Telephone Company in Grantsville and then at Tygart Valley Telephone Company in Mill Creek.
She then worked at McManus Gifts and Stone & Thomas in Elkins. Betty served as a 4-h assistant and leader for 10 years, and she was awarded the 4-h All-star Award for her leadership.
She also worked at the Randolph County Senior Center from 1985-2012 as the activities director, where she organized and served as the guide for several trips, and made many lifelong friends.
Some of Betty’s favorite trips included several cruises to the Eastern and Western Caribbean, the Panama Canal, Alaska and boat cruises in Russia and Holland, as well as other trips to Hawaii, Nova Scotia, Ireland, the west coast from Washington state to Mexico, western national parks, Australia, New Zealand, Canada by rail, Atlantic City and Greece.
She also made many wonderful memories at annual beach vacations with her family.
Betty is survived by her husband of 61 years, Voras, and her three children, Shonnette and Charlie Landis, of Valley Bend, Voras Jr. and Lori Haynes of Elkins, and Annette and Davey Marra of Broadway, Virginia.
She was a wonderful Nana to her grandchildren, Ashleigh and her husband, Wes Barrickman, Jordan Landis, Nicholas Haynes and his mother, Stephanie Haynes, Maddax Haynes, Samantha and Mackensie Marra and Tyler Gray; and two great-granddaughters, Lila and Ava Barrickman.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Jerry and Bud Reynolds; and a granddaughter, Lily Haynes.
She is survived by siblings, Judy Hubbard, Sandi Carr, Connie Sue Nichols, Ronnie Reynolds and Terrie Springston; and many nieces and nephews.
Betty’s memory started fading a few years ago, but even as she battled a devastating disease, Voras and her children took exceptional care of her, making it possible for her to spend all but her final weeks in her home. Betty’s legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of everyone she met.
Her family will miss her immensely, but she taught them that a life well-lived is all about family and that family is everything, so her love and many years of happy memories will live on with them.
Due to COVID precautions, private funeral services for immediate family will take place at Randolph Funeral Home in Valley Bend on Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2020, with Rev. Marvin Parli officiating. Interment will follow at Mountain State Memorial Gardens.
The family requests memorial contributions be made in Betty’s name to First Baptist Church, 412 Randolph Avenue, Elkins, WV 26241, where Betty and Voras were members for many years.
