A workable 1 tube radio, but a little dated design
The tube 1N5G was released in 1937, and has a loctel base, the ‘mini’ tubes, tubes without a bakelite base, become the dominate tube type in use by 19250
The tube is appropriate for a battery set, for its designed to have a low power consumption to make the batteries last long
I suspect this design was use by Boy’s Life authors because of it’s tried and proven performance
The building of this radio was within the skill level of any radio novice and would have been a workable set for whoever built the set
