Carl L. Phillips 1934-2002 Obituary
Carl L. Phillips, 68, a resident of Route 2, Philippi, passed away unexpectedly at 7:52 a.m. Thursday, April 11, 2002, in United Hospital Center.
He was born Jan. 20, 1934, in Nestorville, a son of the late Jesse B. and Bertha L. Marsh Phillips.
He was united in marriage on Jan. 10, 1955, to the former Betty L. Bean, who survives.
Also surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Joyce Ann and husband, Timothy W. Howard, Smithfield, N.C., and Carla and husband, Scot A. Springer, Philippi; three sons and daughters-in-law, Jesse L. and wife, Penny Phillips, Bruceton Mills, Carl Kent and wife, Lora Phillips and Bryan E. and wife, Dianna Phillips, all of Philippi; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by one grandchild.
He was employed as a heavy equipment operator for J.F. Allen. He was a school bus driver for Barbour County Board of Education and retired as a heavy equipment operator for Badger Coal Co.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corp., having served during the Korean Conflict on a Mediterranean cruise. He was a life member and secretary of the Philippi Moose Lodge and a life member of Laurel Mountain VFW Post 410. He was a member of the United Mine Workers District 31, Local 1491, where he served as president. He was a Protestant by faith.
Friends are being received at Wright Funeral Home, 216 N. Walnut St., Philippi, from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sunday, the service hour. Services will be conducted in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. William Smith and the Rev. Daryl Docterman officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Zion Cemetery at Nestorville with military rites being accorded.
