Charles F. “Pete” Filler, 82, a resident of Parsons and a former Parsons City Councilman, died Friday morning, Jan. 11, 2002, at his home. He had been in declining health and death was attributed to cancer.
He was born March 23, 1919, at Parsons, the son of the late Percy F. Filler and Edna Stokes Filler.
On June 23, 1943, at Red House, Md., he married the former Estella “Peg” Shahan, who survives. They celebrated 58 years of marriage.
Surviving are one son, Charles Larry Filler and wife, Gwen, Muskogee, Okla.; one daughter, Ronda L. McAdory and husband, Thomas, Columbia, S.C.; one brother, John Filler and wife, Viola, Parsons; three sisters, Margaret Harlow, Mildred Hebb and Ermalea Mauzy and husband, John, all of Parsons; eight grandchildren, Deanna M. Freels, Memphis, Tenn., Michael C. McAdory, North Augusta, S.C., A. Dawn Menke and Holly A. Hobbs, both of Nashville, Tenn., Pamela F. Martin, Wichita, Kan., Rick Agee, Arlington, Texas, Mark Filler, Lyons, Kan., and R. Brook Filler, Bethany, Okla.; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Percy “Bud” Filler, and two sisters, June Felton and Alice Collette.
Mr. Filler attended Parsons High School and served in the U.S. Air Force in World War II.
He worked for the Dorman Mills Woolen Co. for 36 years as finishing supervisor until the factory closed.
He served as president of the Textile Union for many years, and was a supervisor for the Stillwater Textile Plant in Goshen, Va., until retiring in 1986.
He served on Parsons City Council from 1992 to 2000 and was a member of the Parsons Volunteer Fire Department for many years.
Mr. Filler was a charter member of the Parsons Church of the Nazarene and helped with the construction of the sanctuary and activities center.
He and his wife received the Distinguished Service Award for their number of years of service to the church.
Funeral Arrangements: Friends will be received at the Barb & Greenlief Funeral Home in Parsons from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday. On Monday, Mr. Filler will be moved to the Parsons Church of the Nazarene for visitation from noon until 1 p.m., the funeral hour. The Rev. James Ellis will officiate and interment will follow at the Pifer Mountain Cemetery at St. George.
