It is with unbelievable grief that we say goodbye to our beloved son, grandson, father, and brother, Corey Michael Winn. Corey died by suicide in the morning hours of March 15th, 2021 at the age of 27.
Corey was born August 15th, 1993 in Elkins West Virginia. As a young boy, he wrestled and played football, rode motorcycles, and hunted and fished with his dad and brother. As an adult, he became interested in how things around him worked. He graduated from Fred W. Eberle Technical Center in 2012 and worked in the construction field. He later helped his family with the growth of their own restaurant business and became a happy familiar face for regulars at 1863 Appalachian Bistro.
Those that knew him best knew his profound loyalty and love for those around him. His appreciation for the outdoors shined during dawn and dusk in a blind hunting with his father, or on a chilled evening with a fire he had built in a matter of seconds roaring beside him. His love for cooking drove him towards passion and developing skill in the kitchen. He found comfort in creating and he was an aspiring chef.
When Corey smiled, it spread a playful joy through the room that was truly contagious. His deepest love was his daughter Amelia whom his whole heart belonged. This same love is what helped him be so supportive to those who surrounded him. Corey was a passionate, caring, and truly loving man that was always there for others. It is with this compassion we received so often from him that we attempt to cope with the deep struggle he was facing within himself. After years of battling his own pain, the darkness was too much to bear. Corey is survived by his daughter Amelia, father and best friend Mike, brother Anthony, mother Kim, stepmother Velora Winn and step-sister Lily Anderson, his grandparents Beni and Bob Armentrout, Jackie Wetzel, Jay and Claudia Winn, a menagerie of cousins, and other dear loved ones.
There will be a celebration of Corey’s life at the Randolph Room above 1863 Appalachian Bistro on Friday March 19, 2021 from 5 to 7:30 pm.
In lieu of flowers, the Winn family asks that donations in Corey’s name be made to the West Virginia Suicide Prevention Council in order to help others in their own time of darkness and loss. More information on donating can be found at www.preventsuicidewv.com
