Creola H. Gum Davy, 85, a former resident of the Midland community near Elkins, and a patient at Nella’s Inc. in Crystal Springs, passed away at 11 p.m. Wednesday, March 20, 2002, at Davis Memorial Hospital.
She was born Feb. 21, 1917, at Mill Creek, a daughter of the late Joseph and Birchey Currence Gum.
On Oct. 15, 1938, at Elkins, she married Victor R. Davy, who preceded her in death on Nov. 15, 1969.
She is survived by one son, Victor L. Davy of Salisbury, N.C.; one daughter, Janice A. Kyle and husband, Jeffrey, of Elkins; a special niece, Mrs. Marc (Stephanie Spencer) Humpris of Harker Heights, Texas, who made her home with Mrs. Davy; one sister, Jo Ann Phares of Elkins; a great-niece and nephew, C.J. and Emily Humphris.
Preceding her in death were five brothers, John Gum, Woodrow “Woody” Gum, Robert “Shorty” Gum, Olan “Pete” Gum and James “Jim” Gum; and one sister, Lula Haddix.
Mrs. Davy was a 1935 graduate of Beverly High School. She had worked for the Western Maryland Credit Union and retired from the U.S. Forest Service where she worked with the Older Americans Program. She was an active member of the Elkins Church of the Nazarene where she served as church treasurer for 29 years and church custodian for 15 years.
She was Nazarene World Missionary treasurer for eight years and primary boys and junior girls Sunday School teacher for several years.
Friends may call from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. Sunday at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. On Monday, Mrs. Davy will be moved to Elkins Church of the Nazarene where friends may call from noon until 1 p.m., the funeral hour. Pastor Terry Burgess will officiate and interment will follow in the American Legion’s Little Arlington Cemetery.
