Doris Ann “Bootsie” Hoffman Baker, age 86, a resident of Mill Creek, passed away Wednesday, December 22, 2021, at her home peacefully with family and friends. She was born August 10, 1935, in Onego, WV (Pendleton County) a daughter of the late Luther Brown and the late Mary Mahala Stalnaker Hoffman. Shortly after the death of her father, the family moved to the Mill Creek area where she lived her remaining years. On August 1, 1970, in the Mill Creek United Methodist Church, she was married to Jack W. Baker who preceded her in death on July 11, 1989. Surviving is one daughter, Tamala Phillips and husband Cayce, of Camden, SC, six granddaughters, Kathleen, Allison, Emily, Lydia, Jillian, and Gabriella, and one great-grandchild William. Preceding her in death besides her parents and husband was one sister: Rheba Violet Arbogast, one brother: Robert Brown Hoffman, nephew: David Michael Hoffman, Brother-in-law: Rev. James Bert Arbogast, and Father and Mother-in-law, Scott and Nora Bell Nicholson Baker. Mrs. Baker was a graduate of Tygarts Valley High School, Davis and Elkins College, and did graduate work at West Virginia University. She was a teacher in the Randolph County Schools for thirty-four years before her retirement, beginning her career at the Mitchell Run One Room School. She taught in the first Randolph County Headstart program at the First Ward School in Elkins. She was a life member of the county, state, and National Education Association and PTA in Mill Creek. She loved to reminisce with her “kids” and keep in contact with them throughout her teaching and retirement years. She participated in many communities and church activities, belonging to the Senior Center and singing in the Tyrand Community Choir. She became a member of the Mill Creek United Methodist Church in 1946 and served various ministries in the church. She sang in the church choir, music being an integral part of her life. In earlier years she sang at many weddings and funerals, as well as Christmas and Easter pageants. She belonged to the Mill Creek United Methodist Women and was a lay speaker for the churches on the charge. She had many friends, was always making new friends, and tried to be a friend to everyone. Friends may call from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm Tuesday, December 28, 2021, at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. Huttonsville Rebekah Lodge No. 103 will conduct a memorial service at 6:30 pm Tuesday from the funeral home chapel. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday, December 29th from the funeral home chapel with Rev. Pam Ritchie and Rev. Andrew Boley officiating. Interment will follow in the Elkins Memorial Gardens. Masks and social distancing are recommended for those attending the services. Contributions may be made to the Mill Creek United Methodist Church, Route 219/250, Mill Creek, WV 26280, in memory of Mrs. Baker. The Tomblyn Funeral Home of Elkins oversees the arrangements for Doris Ann “Bootsie” Baker.
