Dorothy “Granny” Bright, 86, of 168 S. Kanawha St., Buckhannon, died Wednesday, June 11, 2003, in Davis Memorial Hospital in Elkins.

She was born Sept. 4, 1916, at Weston, a daughter of the late Eli Monroe and Lucy Bird Ratliff Marsh.

She was married to Homer Lee Bright, who preceded her in death.

Surviving are one sister, Pearl Clifton, Weston; two grandsons, Mark Riggs and wife, Margaret, French Creek, and Gregory Riggs and wife, Cheryl, Buckhannon; three granddaughters, Susan Arey and Robyn Simons and husband, John, all of Buckhannon, and Jane Riggs Younkman and husband, Derek, Bellefountain, Ohio; two special nieces, Juanita Rossey, Jane Lew, and Jo Edwards, Weston; one son-in-law, Dale F. Riggs, Buckhannon; 16 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters and seven brothers; her first husband, Russell Lantz and second husband, Charles Presley Gay. S

he worked for C&P Telephone Co.

She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star 86, Buckhannon Elks Club No. 1736, Buckhannon Moose Lodge 598, VFW Post 3663 and Upshur County Republican Women.

She was the former owner of “Maggies Restaurant” in Buckhannon for 20 years.

She was famous for her homemade pies in the 1970s and 80s.

Maggie’s was the favorite hangout for West Virginia Wesleyan College Students and local residents. Upshur County Law Enforcement Officers knew that she always had a hot cup of coffee when they needed a break. She loved her family, friends, and will be missed by all.

She was a born again Christian.

At the request of the deceased the body will be cremated and there will be no public visitation or funeral.

A private family memorial service will be held with the traditional scattering of the ashes at a later date.

The Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
