Frieda Haynes Franquiz 1908-2002 Obituary

Frieda Haynes Franquiz, 94, of 52 Tahanto Trail, Harvard, Mass., died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002, at the Life Care Center of Nashoba Valley in Littleton, Mass.

She was born in Suffield, Conn., on Jan. 3, 1908, the daughter of the late Edward and Christine Doolittle Haynes, and was the wife of the late JosÈ A. Fr·nquiz.

She graduated from Keene, N.H., High School in 1926 and later attended nursing school at New England Deaconess Hospital. She also attended the University of Puerto Rico and West Virginia Wesleyan College, where she received a bachelor of arts degree in 1950.

She married JosÈ Fr·nquiz in Esenada, Puerto Rico, in 1933. They lived in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, for 10 years, where her husband was a professor of philosophy at the University of Puerto Rico. They later moved to Buckhannon where Dr. Fr·nquiz was a professor of philosophy at West Virginia Wesleyan College until he retired.

Mrs. Fr·nquiz was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star where she was a worthy matron and grand representative to Texas. She was also a member of the United Methodist Women and a member of the Fred Brooks Bird Garden Club. Frieda was also a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority, where she was secretary for seven years and received the Arc of Epsilon Pi.

After her husband’s death in 1975, she continued to live in Buckhannon. In 1991 she began living in Puerto Rico during the winter and living with her daughter in Harvard, Mass., during the summer. She became a member of the Congregation Church, UCC, in Harvard.

Mrs. Fr·nquiz is survived by her daughters, Arline Marteney, three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at the Evangelical Congregational Church, Still River Road, Harvard, at 3 p.m. Nov. 24. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Heifer Project International at the NE regional office at 216 Wachusett St., Rutland, Mass. 01543.
