Gerald Nelson Chewning, 84, a former resident of Mabie and a resident of Fisher since 1999, passed away unexpectedly Sunday afternoon, June 30, 2002, at Davis Memorial Hospital emergency department.
He was born Nov. 7, 1917, at Cassity, a son of the late Oscar G. and Rita Herron Chewning.
On Nov. 18, 1942, he married the former Maida E. Simmons, who survives.
Also surviving are one son, Gerald L. Chewning and wife, Dorothy, of Melbourne, Fla.; five daughters, Mrs. Ronald (Judy) McCollam of Mabie, Mrs. Robert (Anna) Bobo of Fisher, Mrs. Willie (Nancy) Haggerty of Purgitsville, Ms. Catherine Weese and Mrs. Casey (Sandy) Carriger, both of Moorefield; one brother, Thurman Chewning of East Dailey; two sisters, Retha Ward of Elkins, and Agnus Poling of Huttonsville; 17 grandchildren, one stepgrandson and 15 great-grandchildren.
Also preceding him in death were one son, Theodore Rodney Chewning; one grandson, Michael Weese; two brothers, Orval O. and Loyal Junior Chewning; and two sisters, Ruby Linger and Ola Graham.
Mr. Chewning worked for 24 years as a coal miner, several years in the woods and sawmill business and retired after 14 1/2 years as a heavy equipment mechanic for the West Virginia Department of Highways.
Friends may call from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. today at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Frank Long and the Rev. Carl Cutright officiating. Interment will follow in Rowan Memorial Cemetery near Mabie.
