HAZEL BELL LANDIS CONKLIN, age 88 years, a well known educator and a resident of Elkins, WV departed this life Wednesday afternoon, December 23, 2009 at the Iveagh Trust, Elkins, WV.
She was born Sunday, September 25, 1921 at Adrian, WV a daughter of the late Raymond Landis and Hattie Bell Landis. During 1945 at Clarksburg, WV she was married to William Wood Conklin, Jr., who preceded her in death July 28, 1980. Surviving are one son, William Wood “Tim” Conklin, III and wife Beth, Elkins; two grandchildren, Sean Alan and Holly Adele Conklin and one great granddaughter, Alexis Hewitt.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family being preceded in death by one brother, Harold Landis.
She was a graduate of Elkins High School with the Class of 1939 and was a graduate of Davis & Elkins College with the Class of 1943 with a degree in Education. She taught at Tygart Valley High School and Elkins Junior High School, retiring with thirty-eight years of service. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, was a volunteer with the Davis Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She loved to do needlepoint and travel.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 5 to 8 PM, Monday. Final Rites will be conducted at the funeral home chapel, Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at 12:30 PM. The Reverend Doctor Basil A. Hensley will officiate and interment will follow at the Maplewood Cemetery at Elkins, WV. The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to the First United Methodist Church, 315 Kerens Avenue, Elkins, WV 26241.
