Mr. Hobert Elza Bender, age 92 a resident of Belington and more recently of the Barbour County Good Samaritan Society, departed this life Sunday evening November 15, 2020 in the care facility. Death was following a period of declining health.
He was born October 18, 1928 at Mabie, WV a son of the late Jesse Edwin and Lillie Gay Lambert Bender. On July 1, 1950, he was united in marriage to the former Margaret Ann McDonald, who survives at their home in Belington. They had celebrated 70 years of marriage.
In addition to his wife he is survived by three children; Thomas Bender and wife Joyce of the Kingsville Community, Wanda Gandee and companion Darrell Holley of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and Carolyn Coberly and husband Alan of Belington. Additional survivors include three grandchildren; Mathew Bender, Craig Bender, and Shayliagh Coberly and five great grandchildren; Jacob Bender, Madison Bender, Adriel Prieto, Daniel Prieto, and Shanda Howell.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by ten siblings: Gladys Ruby Bender, Vada Virginia Bender, Virga Mae Bender, Novil Edward Bender, Sterling Alfred Bender, Earl Fredrick Bender, Herbert Ellis Bender, Hazel Elisabeth Bender, Pearl Margaret Bender, and Bruce Arden Bender. Hobert was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Hobert attended the schools of Randolph County and previously was employed by LaRosa Fuel as a heavy equipment operator, from which he retired. He was a proud veteran of the US Army and was a member of the VFW Laurel Mountain Post #410.
He was also a founding member of the Junior Volunteer Fire Department. He was a wonderful man, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather. In his spare time, he loved to build bird houses or any kind of wood working and he loved to be in the outdoors and fish. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
A private family visitation will be at the Talbott Funeral Home in Belington on Wednesday November 18, 2020 at 1:00 pm. Hobert’s wishes for cremation will then be honored and his cremains will be interred at a later date. The family asks in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made Mountain Hospice 1002 S.
