Ira Joseph Peppy Altieri Obituary 1949-2013
Ira Joseph “Peppy” Altieri, 63, a former resident of Elkins, and more recently a resident of Buckhannon, departed this life peacefully early Wednesday morning, Jan. 16, 2013, in St. Joseph’s Hospital at Buckhannon, in the arms of his wife. He had been in declining health fighting a courageous three-year battle with lung cancer.
He was born Thursday, July 21, 1949, at Elkins, a son of the late Alfred Joseph “Nick” Altieri and the former Phyllis Rae Chambers.
On Dec. 12, 2012 at Buckhannon, he was married to Maria Theresa Manning, who survives.
Also surviving are one goddaughter, Molly Finlayson of Buckhannon; and his dog, Maggie, who adopted “Peppy.”
He was a graduate of Saint Brendan Catholic School, where he was a member of the basketball team, and a graduate of Elkins High School in the class of 1967, where he was a member of the football squad as a lineman, and of the wrestling and track teams. He was a graduate of Davis & Elkins College.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Vietnam War and was a licensed surveyor in West Virginia, Virginia, and Maryland. He was a mine inspector for the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection, retiring during 2011. He enjoyed playing slow and fast pitch softball, was a world traveler, Harley Rider and the best friend a person could have. He was a member of H.W. Daniel’s Post 29, American Legion and Tygart Valley Post 3647, Veterans of Foreign Wars. The family would like to thank the Davis Memorial Hospital’s Cancer Care Center, the Philadelphia location for the Cancer Treatment Centers of America and St. Joseph’s Hospital at Buckhannon for the compassionate care that was received.
The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19. On Saturday, at 2 p.m., a funeral service will be conducted with Michael Y. A. Joseph as the Celebrant. Interment will follow in Saint Brendan Cemetery at Elkins where full military honors will be accorded by members of the H.W. Daniel’s Post 29 American Legion, Tygart Valley Post 3647 Veterans of Foreign Wars and the West Virginia National Guard Honor Guard.
