Irene Coffman 1927-2012 Obituary
Irene Coffman, age 85, a resident of the Odd Fellow and Rebekah Home in Elkins, WV, passed from this life Wednesday, July 4, 2012.
Born on February 19, 1927, and raised in Randolph County, Irene was the daughter of the late Solomon and Stella Carr.
She was married to Mack Coffman who preceded her in death. Irene is survived by her daughter Charlotte Raines Murrill and husband Thomas of Lutherville MD; two granddaughters, Tammy L. Gray and husband Christopher, Timonium, MD, and Terri L. Schultz and Husband Troy, Timonium, MD; three great grandchildren, Connor, Tyler, and Emma Elizabeth; and two brothers, Solomon Carr and Curtis Carr, both of Elkins. She was preceded in death by four brothers and four sisters.
Irene was a graduate of Fairmont Business School and Davis & Elkins College where she received a degree in medical records.
She was an employee of the former Memorial General Hospital for 38 years, serving as medical records librarian.
The hospital board of directors awarded Irene commendation for her devotion and loyalty to the medical institution.
Irene was a devoted mother and loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She always looked forward to receiving pictures and cards from her family. Known for her ever-present radiant smile and her kindness, Irene was loved by all who knew her.
She had been a resident of the Odd Fellow and Rebekah Home since November 2005.
She enjoyed the Home’s exercise program where she was the champion ball thrower. She will be sadly missed by the staff, residents, and the board of directors. Irene led an active life.
She was an award-winning bowler, having traveled to many competitions with her friends. She enjoyed gardening, helping to prepare dinners for the Rotary Club and assisting with the Elkins IOOF buckwheat feeds.
She was a great fan of West Virginia University’s football and basketball teams.
She was a member of the former Crystal Springs Community Education Outreach Service (CEOS) and later a CEOS member-at-large.
Irene was active in Rebekahs and Odd Fellows.
She was a member of Randolph Odd Fellow Lodge No. 116, a member and Past Nobel Grand of Delphia Rebekah Lodge No. 62, a member of District No. 14 Mountaineer Rebekah Degree Team, and Past President of Auxiliary Tucker No. 8 LAPM.
She was also a member of Randolph Temple No. 77 and Past Grand Chief of Pythian Sisters, State of West Virginia.
Irene’s family wishes to express their gratitude to Charlotte Zimmerman and the staff for the devoted and loving care that Irene received during the past six years at the Odd Fellow and Rebekah Home.
They also commend the ICU staff and doctors at the Davis Memorial Hospital for the care given to Irene.
The family suggests contributions be made to the Odd Fellow and Rebekah Home, 225 Georgetown Road, Elkins, WV 26241, or to the Alzheimer’s Association in Irene’s honor.
Memorial services for Irene will be held at a later date.
