Jack Dempsey Painter -2021 Obituary
Jack Dempsey Painter, 73, a resident of Elkins, departed this life early Wednesday morning at his home. Death was unexpected.
He was born Sept. 12, 1947, in Wymer, a son of the late Walter and Mildred Leary Painter. On Aug. 21, 1970, in Elkins, he was married to the former Pearl Clementine Crites, who preceded him in death on June 10, 2010. Surviving are two stepchildren, Michael Paul Crites and Crystal Crites; and two nephews, James Ray Corley of Waynesville, Missouri, and Charles Butch Corley Jr. of West Virginia.
Jack was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Preceding him in death are two half brothers, Charles Butch Corley Sr. and Delmis Dale Leary.
Jack was a high school graduate and was a veteran of the United States Army during the Vietnam War at Fort Bliss, Texas, and Germany, receiving the National Defense Service Medal. He entered the military in 1966 and was discharged in 1969. He later was a member to the West Virginia Army National Guard as a radar specialist attaining the rank of Specialist 5/sergeant.
He worked for Reliable Roofing for many years and later retired from the United States Postal Service, where he delivered mail on a rural route. In his free time, he worked odd jobs, especially those that helped people in need. He played on a softball league for many years and was an avid hunter and fisherman.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Friday. Final Rites will be conducted at the funeral home, Saturday at 11 a.m. The Rev. Kevin Gainer will officiate and interment will follow at the Mountain State Memorial Gardens in Gilman, where the West Virginia National Guard Honor Guard Program, the H. W. Daniel’s Post No. 29 American Legion and the Tygarts Valley Post No. 3647 Veterans of Foreign Wars will conduct full Military Honors.
