James Eugene Bailey, 86, a resident of 1524 S. Davis Ave., Elkins, and since October, a resident of Nella’s Nursing Home at Crystal Springs, departed this life early Tuesday morning, Dec. 24, 2002, at the nursing home. He had been in declining health since June.
He was born Saturday, April 1, 1916, at Weston, a son of the late James Harvey Bailey and Georgie Bland Summerfield Bailey.
On May 20, 1939, at Monterey, Va., he was married to the former Evangeline Collett, who preceded him in death on May 2, 2001. They had celebrated 61 years of marriage.
Surviving are one daughter, Elizabeth B. “Liz” White; one brother, Robert Blaine Bailey, Elkins and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Clay and Junior Bailey; and one infant sister, Evelyn Bailey.
He attended the schools of Weston. He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a master sergeant with the U.S. Air Force from 1943 to 1945 at Berma and India. He was a manager of the Columbia Gas Co. at Parsons retiring in 1955. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church at Parsons.
Friends will be received at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. today. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home chapel Friday at 11 a.m. The Rev. Donald L. Lockhart will officiate and interment will follow at Mountain State Memorial Gardens at Gilman, where the H.W. Daniel’s Post 29, American Legion will present the American flag.
