James “Willie” Hedrick, 84, went home to be with the Lord, Friday, July 4, 2003. He was a resident of Cortland Acres Nursing Home in Thomas, and formerly of Red Creek.

He was born July 24, 1918, in Red Creek, a son of the late Jasper and Mary Ault Hedrick. He is survived by his wife, Gladys Hedrick, also a resident of Cortland Acres.

Also surviving are eight children, Jim and wife, Kathy, of Red Creek, Richard of Cattlesburg, Ky., Jack and wife, Jean, of Dryfork, Jonathan and wife, Wilma Faye, of Mathias, Audrey Nelson and Larry of Dryfork, Rose Bennett and husband, Bob, of Red Creek, Betty Bonner and husband, Jim, of Gladwin and Judy Smith and husband, Dean, of Harman; one sister, Grace Mitchell and husband, Mitch, of El Paso, Texas; and 24 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Kent Hedrick.

Willie was a long-time member and trustee of the Flanagan Hill United Methodist Church of Red Creek. He was a rural mail carrier, school bus driver, welder and retired from the West Virginia Department of Highways. He was active in the community and was instrumental in obtaining funds and grants for the building of the Flanagan Hill Community Center. He was caretaker of the Flanagan Hill Cemetery, along with his wife, for many years.

Friends were received at the Hinkle Funeral Home on Sunday and funeral services were today at 11 a.m. at the Flanagan Hill United Methodist Church in Red Creek with the Rev. Joe Mininger and the Rev. J.J. Johnson officiating. Interment followed in the Flanagan Hill Cemetery.
