James Roger Basden, 85, of Morgantown, formerly of Elkins, died Saturday, Nov. 3, 2001, at home.

He was born Sept. 28, 1916, in Smithville, Texas, son of the late James Jasper and Irma May Hull Basden.

He attended Southern Methodist University, where he studied journalism. He served in the United States Navy as a chief yeoman during World War II. He worked for Mobile Oil Co. from 1946-71. He worked in Venezuela, Egypt and Iran. He lived in London, England, from 1971 until moving to Elkins in 1974. He was active in Habitat for Humanity, Meals on Wheels, and many other charitable organizations. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Morgantown and the First Baptist Church of Elkins, where he served as deacon and was active in the Bartlett Bible school class.

He is survived by his wife, Bernardette Joan Mary Glencross, whom he married in Cairo, Egypt, on June 16, 1951; two sons, the Rev. Christopher Basden, of London, England, and Thomas Basden, of Morgantown; a daughter, Gerianne Bagoulla, of Springfield, Va.; two sisters, Hattie Louise Carne and Mary Margarette Moore, both of Houston; and three grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by a brother, Richard Hull Basden.

Friends may call at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday. Service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, with the Rev. Nancy Stevens and the Rev. Father Christopher Basden officiating. Burial will be in Mountain State Memorial Gardens. Graveside military rites will be conducted by H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion of Elkins. Tomblyn Funeral Home, of Elkins, is in charge of arrangements.
