Joe Edward Skidmore 1937-2021 Obituary
Joe Edward Skidmore, age 84 years, a resident of Elkins, passed away Monday evening, November 15, 2021 at the West Virginia Caring Hospice Center.
He was born March 23, 1937 at Gassaway, WV, a son of the late Joe Nelson and Amanda Cochran Skidmore. He is survived by his wife of forty-five years, L. Jean Skidmore of Elkins.
Also surviving is one son, William E. Skidmore of Weston, WV; step-son, R. Michael Kerns and wife Ruth of Elkins; one granddaughter, Mikela Skidmore and three step-grandsons, Tyler, Isaac and Alex Kerns.
Joe joined the Army in 1954 and served in a Tank Battalion in Germany for four years. After leaving the service, he worked as a Weston City Policy Officer for four years.
He then worked at various men’s clothing stores in West Virginia and Tennessee before owning and operating his own clothing shop, The Oxford in Parkersburg, WV.
He was an avid bass fisherman and loved taking drives through the West Virginia mountains.
He had been a resident of Elkins for the past fifteen years and was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Elkins. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge for fifty plus years, the York Rites and Shriners.
Joe’s request for cremation was honored and a memorial service will be held at a later date. The Tomblyn Funeral Home of Elkins is in charge of the arrangements for Joe Edward Skidmore.
