John Pershing Carr, 83, of 259 Terrace Ave. and more recently of Colonial Place in Elkins, died Sunday morning, Feb. 3, 2002.
Mr. Carr was born Nov. 12, 1918, a son of the late William H. and Clara Graig Carr.
On Aug. 29, 1941, he married the former Martha Ferguson, who survives in Colonial Place.
Also surviving are two sons, Jay Ferguson Carr, Hershey, Pa., and William Graig Carr, Elkins; a daughter, Martha Lynn Holden, Timonium, Md.; a sister, Dorothy Carr MacDonald, Sarasota, Fla.; four grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Mr. Carr received his law degree from National University in Washington, D.C., and worked for Dow, Lohnes and Albertson before moving to Elkins during 1955. He was president of Marja Broadcasting Corp. and WDNE Radio for many years. He was the director emeritus of the Elkins YMCA, director general of Mountain State Forest Festival, was a president of Elkins-randolph County Chamber of Commerce, a director of the Davis Trust Co. and longtime sponsor of the AA. He was also a member of the Elkins Rotary Club, Kiwanis Club, Benevolent Protective Order of the Elks of Elkins, and served on the Elkins Housing Authority and Randolph County Airport Authority.
He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, where he served as treasurer, vestryman and lay reader.
Funeral Arrangements: At the request of the deceased, his remains were cremated. A memorial service will be held at Grace Episcopal Church Saturday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Fred Valentine officiating. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Elkins YMCA, 400 Davis Ave., Elkins, W.Va. 26241, or Hospice Care Corp., 629 Worth Ave., Elkins, W.Va. 26241.
