John Wilson Payne 1920-2021 Obituary
Mr. John Wilson Payne, age 100, a former resident of Barbour County, WV and more recently a long-time resident of Columbus, Ohio, departed this life Monday morning September 27, 2021 in the Ohio Health Riverside United Methodist Hospital under the care of Ohio Health Hospice in Columbus, Ohio.
Mr. Payne was born November 22, 1920 at Belington, WV a son of the late Lewis W. and Pearl Lantz Payne. On April 16, 1954 he was united in marriage to the love of his life to the former Norma W. Sinsel who preceded him in death.
He is survived by two children; Cathy Moore and husband Calvin of Hartville, Ohio, John Kevin Payne of Columbus, Ohio, one sister; Lelia Mae Hillyard of Barboursville, WV and one brother; Harry R. “Buddy” Payne and wife Shirley of Belington, WV and son in law; Tom Harris of Powell, Ohio.
Additional survivors include Grandchildren; Cara, Christa and Craig Moore, Susanna, Sheila, Shelliegh and Matthew Harris. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
In addition to his parents and wife he is preceded in death by one daughter; Jan Harris, two brothers; Howard Arnold “Red” Payne, Robert Lee Payne, and Mary Romine.
Mr. Payne graduated from Belington High School with the class of 1940. He had worked for Glenn L. Martin Aircraft where he helped build B26’s at the outset of World War II. John served as an aerial engineer first with the Army Air Corps, and then with the United States Air Force. He served in the 13th Troop Carrier Squadron in the South Pacific, serving in five campaigns he rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant, then was called up for active duty in the Air Force Reserves during the Korean War. John was instrumental in building the Corley UM Church along with his brothers and several other volunteers. John left Barbour County to work for the North American Aircraft Corporation in Columbus, Ohio and then worked for CVI Corporation in management from which he retired. His work highlights include working on NASA’s Viking 1 Lander that touched down on Mars in 1976 and was involved with the team that developed and built the very first MRI and full body medical scanner. In his spare time John enjoyed gardening, camping, fishing and researching the Payne Family History. John’s favorite place to visit was always coming home to Barbour County.
Friends will be received at the Talbott Funeral Home 56 N. Brandenburg in Belington, WV from 6-9 p.m. on Saturday October 2, 2021. On Sunday October 3, 2021 Mr. Payne will be moved to the Corley UM Church near Belington where friends may call from 1-2 p.m. the funeral hour with the Pastor Jon Fox officiating where a funeral service will be conducted from the church. Interment will follow in the Barbour Memorial Cemetery where full military rites will be accorded. Due to Covid-19 face coverings are highly recommended.
