Joseph C. Furgione 1919-2003 Obituary
Joseph Charles Furgione, 84, of Philippi, formerly of Cleveland, Ohio, died early Tuesday morning, July 1, 2003, in Davis Memorial Hospital, following an extended illness.
He was born Jan. 8, 1919, in Hammonton, N.J., a son of the late Charles Pasquale and Mary Antoinette (Cione) Furgione.
His wife, Patty “Elsie (Sutton) Furgione, preceded him in death.
Survivors include one daughter, Lana Jo Shockey and husband, Larry, Philippi; three grandchildren, Tanya Slaton, Fredericksburg, Va., Gil Joseph Blake, Philippi, and Sherry Kay Furgione, Morgantown; three great-grandchildren, Michael Brent Slaton, Daniel Joseph Blake and Joseph Montana Slaton; two brothers, Anthony Furgione, Chesilhurst, N.J., and Robert Furgione, Mays Landing, N.J.; three sisters, Helen Capri, Edgewater Park, N.J., Alice Bastein, Thorofare, N.J., and Mary Lou Wigginton, Deptford, N.J.
He was preceded in death by one son, Joey Furgione; one granddaughter, Theresa Illene Daugherty; and his former wife, Madalyn T. (Campbell) Furgione Anderson.
Mr. Furgione retired as a printer-typesetter for the Cleveland Plain Dealer Newspaper. He had also worked for several area publishers including Barbour Publishing Co., Clarksburg Publishing Co. and the Fairmont Times-West Virginian.
Mr. Furgione was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army. He was involved in the Invasion of Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. On Sept. 9, 2001, he received the Medal of Freedom from the French people. He was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars in New Jersey.
Friends may call at Stemple & Forman Funeral Home in Philippi from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. Saturday, when Mr. Furgione will be moved to the Philippi United Methodist Church, where friends may call from noon until 1 p.m. when funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. Gary Rapking. Interment will follow in West Virginia National Cemetery near Grafton. Stemple & Forman Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.
