The Rev. Lejeune Lewis, 89, of Serenity Care Home in Buckhannon, died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013, in Serenity Care Home.
He was born Dec. 22, 1923, at Buckhannon, a son of the late Carl Raymond and Gladys Perry Lewis.
On Aug. 24, 1947, he married Gail Wilfong, who preceded him in death July 15, 2004.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one brother, Perry Carl “Pug” Lewis; and one sister, Betty Ann Lewis.
He is survived by one daughter, Barbara Ann Smith and husband, Gregory, of Montrose; one son, David Lewis and wife, Pam, of Eleanor; one granddaughter, Michelle Lewis and friend, Jerry Crawford, of Groveport, Ohio; two grandsons, Stephen Lewis and wife, Olivia, of Clarksburg and David Califf II and wife, Teea, of Pottsville, Pa.; three great-granddaughters, Makayla Smith and Mariyah Crawford both of Groveport, Ohio, and Hailey Califf of Pottsville, Pa.; three great-grandsons, Jeremiah Lewis of Clarksburg, Logan Califf of Pottsville, Pa., and Jerelle Crawford of Groveport, Ohio; one stepgrandson, Todd Slack and wife, Barbie, of Charleston; three stepgranddaughters, Micah Moore and husband, Jody, of Red House, Lauren Evans and husband, Derek, of Bridgeport and Christina Smith of Morgantown; and several stepgreat-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
The Rev. Lewis was a member and chaplain of American Legion Post 44 of Philippi. He was associated with Boy Scouts of America since 1936 and was an Eagle Scout. He attended Chapel Hill United Methodist Church and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. The Rev. Lewis graduated from West Virginia Wesleyan College in 1949 and United Theological Seminary in 1952 and received his Master of Divinity in 1972. He was a member of the West Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church from 1948 to present and served as pastor for numerous churches. He also served in many civic organizations. There was no one that Lejeune didn’t love or care about.
Friends will be received Sunday, Jan. 6, from 5 to 9 p.m. at Poling-st. Clair Funeral Home. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Chapel Hill United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ronald M. McCauley and the Rev. Dr. Joseph M. Shreve officiating. Burial will follow in Heavner Cemetery in Buckhannon. Buckhannon Veterans of Foregin Wars Post 3663, Frank B. Bartlett Post 7 American Legion and Disabled American Veterans Chapters 5 and 36 will conduct military honors at the graveside.
