Leland L. “Shorty” Stalnaker, 81, of Point Pleasant Road, Route 2, Belington, died Sunday evening, July 21, 2002, at his home, following a six- week illness.
He was born Feb. 21, 1921, at Belington, a son of the late Jerome and Dana Gaynor Stalnaker.
On April 18, 1942, he married the former Jean Bennett, who survives at Point Pleasant Road, Belington.
Also surviving are four sons, Leslie Stalnaker and wife, Ann, Jerry Stalnaker and wife, Sonja, all of Elkton, Md., Bob Stalnaker and wife, Novella, Falls Church, Va., and Bill Stalnaker and wife, Cindy, Stow, Ohio; three sisters, Helen Griffith, Augusta, Dora Lea Beckner and Mary Lou Wagner, both of Philippi; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by one daughter, Betty Ann Stalnaker.
Mr. Stalnaker retired in 1983 as assistant supervisor of the Barbour County Division of the West Virginia Department of Highways. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the European, African and Middle Eastern Theaters with the 503rd Quartermaster Company. He was a member of Laurel Mountain Post 410, VFW at Belington and was a member and deacon of Faith Way Baptist Church.
Friends may call at Faith Way Baptist Church, U.S. Route 250, north of Belington from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. Wednesday when funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Downing Gregory. Interment will follow in the Valley Bend Cemetery.
