MARY BELLE WHITECOTTON SMITH, age 96 years, a resident of Gilman, WV for forty-three years and more recently a resident of the Elkins Regional Convalescent Center at Elkins, WV went home to be with her Lord late Tuesday evening, February 23, 2010 at the Davis Memorial Hospital. She had been in declining health for the past several months.
She was born Friday, June 13, 1913 at Dryfork, WV a daughter of the late William Cornelius Whitecotton and Sarah Alice Hedrick Whitecotton. On January 15, 1933 she was married to Joseph Daniel Smith who preceded her in death. Those who remain to cherish her memory are two sons, Bobby Clyde Smith, Ranger, TX; The Reverend Donald David Smith and wife Vivian, Dublin, VA; one sister, Opal White Troy, Berlin Center, OH; seven grandchildren; Beth Smith Hill and husband Marshall, Radford, VA; Stephen Smith and wife Carol, Blacksburg, VA; Rachel Smith Timmers and husband Johannis, Druten, Netherlands; Clem Stewart, Jr. and wife Beverly, Timberville, VA; Joseph Stewart, Huttonsville; Linda Stewart and husband Nick Kesner, Maysville; Barbara Stewart, Buckhannon; special caregivers, Kathy Stewart Edmond and husband Lloyd, Norton; nine great grandchildren; Dawn Hill Gunn and husband Mark, White Gate, VA; Brittany Smith, Blacksburg, VA; and Chelsea Smith, Radford University, VA; Tanya and Jamie Timmers, Puiflijk, Netherlands; Clem Stewart, III and wife Bettie, Newport News, VA; Travis Stewart and wife Jamerrill, Timberville, VA; Michael Stewart and wife Kayla, Norton; Kevin Stewart, Norton; and fifteen great great grandchildren; Morgan Elizabeth and twins Alexander and Jacob Gunn, White Gate, VA; Ryan Campbell, Zachary, Robert, Maya, Maurice, Lia, and Quentin Bell-stewart, Newport News, VA; Jadin, Zion and Naomi Stewart, Timberville, VA and Natalia and Logan Stewart, Norton.
Preceding her in death are one daughter, Vada Smith Stewart; the children of Cornelius and Sarah Alice Whitecotton; Harry Sanford Whitecotton; Annie Whitecotton Smith; Noah Clyde Whitecotton; and Paul Benjamin Whitecotton; the children of Jessie Lafayette White and Sarah Alice Whitecotton; Jimmy Junior White; David Lafayette White, Opal White Troy and children of Jessie White, first marriage; Hansford White, Bertha White Wilfong and Elva White Kulp.
She attended the schools of Dryfork, and was a homemaker. She was a graduate of the Class of 1967 of the Second Class of the World’s First Cancer Care Corps. and was a member of the Orlena United Methodist Church.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins on Friday, February 26, 2010 from 5 to 7 PM, the funeral hour. On Saturday, February 27, 2010, Mrs. Smith will be moved to the Mountain State Memorial Gardens at Gilman, WV where Graveside Services will be conducted at 11:30 AM.
