Mrs. Forrest G. Clark 1908-2001 Obituary
Catherine Patton Clark, 93, of Bridgeport, died Oct. 23 at home.
Born Aug. 20, 1908 in Bridgeport, she was the daughter of of the late John and Goodie Johnson Patton. In 1931, she married Forrest G. Clark who preceded her in death in 1989.
She was also preceded in death by a brohter, W. Richard Patton.
Mrs. Clark was a 1926 graduate of Bridgeport High School and received a bachelor of arts degree in journalism from West Virginia University. She completed graduate work at the Michigan State University in Lansing, MI and Columbia University in New York.
Her husband, a physical education teacher, coached the 1934 Parsons High School team to the state basketball championship when all schools in the state were under one classification.
During her 38 years of teaching, Mrs. Clark taught English, journalism and speech in high schools in Bridgeport, Flemington, Famrington, and at Parkersburg where the school won national awards. She was director of public relations for Wood County School. At Alderson-Broaddus College she was on the administrative staff and was in charge of public relations.
Mrs. Clark was one of the first persons to open a Named Fund in Tucker Coimmunity Endowment Foundation. Established as a memorial to her husband, the Fund has issued more than 2300 iin scolarships to Tucker County High School students.
Mrs. Clark was a member of Simposn Creek Baptist Church where she served ont he board of trustees. She worked five years on the committee which achieved Bridgeport’s top rating as an All-West Virginia City, and had served as president of West Virginia Association from 1959 through 1961.
In 1997, she received the Michael Benedum Fellow Award.
