Roy E. Poe 1920-2002 Obituary
Roy E. Poe, 81, a resident of Nella’s Nursing Home, passed away Monday, March 11, 2002, at 7:15 a.m., at the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center, where he was admitted earlier in the day. He had been in failing health; however, death was unexpected.
He was born Oct. 12, 1920, in Elkins, a son of the late Omer Clyde and Etta Ware Poe.
On May 10, 1993, he was united in marriage to the former Josephine M. Shepard, who is currently a resident at Nella’s Nursing Home.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Lois Henry and husband, Willie, of Kerens, and Marian Spartman and husband, Richard, of Arkansas; two sons, William Wellman and wife, Wilma, of Junior, and Tom Wellman and wife, Pat, of Arkansas; one sister, Mrs. Victor (Virginia) Mastrogiuseppe Sr. of Coalton; one brother, Vernon Poe of Humble, Texas; 13 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death besides his parents are one daughter, Donna Lou Wellman; three sisters, Letta Gum and two infants; three brothers, Ronald, Don and Dale Poe; and one great-grandson, Kenneth Falls.
He was a lumberman in Virginia and was a custodian at a nursing home. In 1942, he joined the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1945, and then joined the U.S. Air Force. After being honorably discharged from the Air Force he then joined the Army Engineers. He was a member of the Abundant Life Christian Center.
Friends will be received at F.E. Runner Funeral Home today after 6 p.m. On Thursday, Mr. Poe will be moved to Abundant Life Christian Center for visitation from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m., the funeral hour. Pastor Curlie Ray Jr. of Abundant Life Christian Center will officiate. Interment will follow in Mt. State Memorial Gardens at Gilman. The family has requested in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mr. Poe’s memorial to Abundant Life Christian Center, PO Box 448, Beverly, W.Va. 26253.
