Born December 10, 1927 in Sugarlands, WV, he was the son of the late William Carter and Cora Ethel (Knotts) Mullenax.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Janet Lea Gillespie, a grandson Trinity Scott Gillespie, a great-grandson, Rylee David Friend, son-in-law Mike Filsinger, brothers Homer, Lawrence, John and Ray, and sisters Ellen Stewart and Leota Fultz.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Rose Marie (Bohon) Mullenax, daughters Lona Filsinger, Swanton, MD, Debra Wagner (Larry), and Trish Rumer (Dave) both of Oakland, MD; and son Roy Wayne Mullenax (Melissa) of Horse Shoe Run. Grandchildren included, Stephanie, Lorrie and Carrie Filsinger, Leslie, Brandon and Joshua Peck, Phillip Rumer and Heather and Kelsey Mullenax. Great-grandchildren included, Taylor and Evan Swiger, Jarrett, Jett, Jaxxton and Jaggar Miller, Rebecca and Rachel Peck, Liam and Kinsley Rumer and Mylan and Mia Matlick. He has one surviving sibling, Jean Toothman, Shinnston, WV and his beloved cat, Peek-a-boo.
In 1956 Roy and Marie purchased their farm, working the farm with a team of horses for over 10 years before upgrading to a Case tractor. He loved farming and milking cows, by hand, with his beloved sidekick, Jan, for many years. He was employed at the age of 16 by Cecil Evans to work in the woods cutting timber. From there he went to work on the sawmill for Sam Frazee. He ended his timber career in 1991 after retiring from Coastal Lumber, where he was a dedicated and loyal employee for over 40 years.
After retirement he found great pleasure in spending time at the Terra Alta Stockyard, buying and selling and enjoying time being spent with the “old timers” there. He would also make numerous trips into Sugarlands in his Dodge pickup to check on the cattle grazing on his homeplace. He will be remembered as being a hardworking and honest man along with being an awesome Pop-Pop to his grandchildren and great- grandchildren. He was a man of few words but you knew where you stood in his life.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bethel United Methodist (Texas) Church and/or cemetery fund, c/o Jack Cassidy 726 Maple Spring Hwy, Eglon, WV 26716.
