Thamar L. “Tim” Harper Sr., 72, of Hartwick, N.Y., died unexpectedly at his home on Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2003.

He was born at Harman on June 14, 1931, the son of the late Carney and Sylva J. Teter Harper.

He attended Randolph County schools, including the Harperton Grade School, a two-room schoolhouse.

On April 2, 1951, he married Harriette Preston Harper of Hartwick, N.Y.

Thamar was 16 years old when he helped build the flood dam in Elkins. Later he was employed by Republic Steel in Youngstown, Ohio, and in New York by Peterson’s Farm, Wright’s Farm Supply and Corning Glass.

He served as highway superintendent for the town of Hartwick and the town of Laurens. Most recently he owned Tim Harper’s Stump Removal.

For several years Thamar proudly served as fire chief of Hartwick, N.Y.

He enjoyed the time spent with his family and especially his grandsons. He also enjoyed visiting with family in his home state of West Virginia.

He is survived by his loving wife, Harriette, with whom he celebrated 52 years of marriage.

He is also survived by two sons and two daughters, Deborah Clegg and husband, Ronald, of Hartwick, N.Y., Thamar L. “Tim” Harper Jr. and wife, Lori, of Hartwick, N.Y., Norma Jean Burkhart of West Oneonta, N.Y., and James C. Harper and wife, Deborah, of Hartwick, N.Y.

He is also survived by four grandsons, Jacob Burkhart and wife, Kimberly, Andrew Clegg and friend, Anne Hall, Eric Burkhart and friend, Becki White, and Carney Harper.

He is survived by four sisters and two brothers, Helen and Homer Rapp of Summersville, Billy and Louise Harper of Beckley, Anna May and Layne Hinkle of Chardon, Ohio, Howard and Evelyn Harper of Beverly, Rosemary and Bobby Vance of Onego, and Kitty and Jack Judy of Harman; and his brother-in-law, Charles Preston of New York.

Also surviving are several beloved nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two infant grandchildren, Amanda Clegg and Philip Clegg; and by two infant brothers, Jacob Columbus Harper and Ralph Carney Harper.

Friends will be received at the F.E. Runner Funeral Home Chapel after 6 p.m. Saturday. Graveside services will be conducted at the Jacob C. Harper Family Cemetery at 10 a.m. Sunday. The family will make a dedication of the grave and interment will follow. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested for memorial contributions be made to the Hartwick Emergency Squad, PO Box 208, Hartwick, N.Y. 13348.
