VIVIAN MCCOMAS LEONARD, age 95 years, a resident of Beverly, WV departed this life late Wednesday morning, April 21, 2010 at Valentines Personal Care Home at Elkins, WV. She had been in declining health since July of 2009.
She was born Tuesday, December 29, 1914 near Stallings, WV a daughter of the late “Nestor” McComas and Ivy Walls McComas. As both her parents passed on early in Vivian’s life she was raised by her Aunt Flora Midkiff until her marriage to John C. Leonard in 1933, who departed this life October 7, 1969. Vivian and John had made their home in Beverly since 1934 and had one son, Dr. Rex Leonard and wife Carolyn, Colorado Springs, CO. John had been a teacher and principal in Randolph County Schools for many years prior to his passing. Also surviving are three grandchildren; Leslie Little and husband David, Bellaire, TX; Blake Leonard, Jackson, MS; John Leonard and wife Gayle, Katy, TX and five great grandsons.
Many know Vivian from her many years of playing the organ for the Beverly Presbyterian Church. She began to play the piano at five years of age without any formal training. It was a natural talent. She loved to paint in her early years and has left many of her paintings with family members as well as others about the community. Vivian also supported her community and church by baking numerous loaves of bread and serving other kinds of food at church and local festivals.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral home of Elkins from 5 to 7 PM, Monday. The casket will remain closed. On Tuesday, April 27, 2010, Mrs. Leonard will be moved to the Beverly Presbyterian Church where friends may call from 12 Noon to 1 PM, the funeral hour. The Rev. Joanne Glaser will officiate and interment will follow at the Beverly Cemetery at Beverly, WV.
