Willard Thornton Whiteman 1930-2013 Obituary
Willard Thornton Whiteman, age 93 years, a resident of Elkins, WV departed this life Thursday afternoon, December 26, 2013 at the Valentines Personal Care Home at Elkins, WV.
He was born Friday, November 5, 1920 at Elkins, WV a son of the late Thornton Russell “T. R.” and Martha Cecelia Gank Whiteman. On November 26, 1947 at Elkins, WV he was married to the former Consuella Katherine Albright, who survives. They had celebrated sixty-six years of marriage. Also surviving are one son Gary Edward Whiteman and wife Rebecca, Elkins; one sister, Leona Purdum and husband Raymond, Kingwood; and one grandson, Joel Thomas Whiteman and wife Clemence Cretaux, Morgantown.
Preceding him in death are three brothers, Charles; Ernest; and Robert Whiteman; and seven sisters, Madeline Crickard; Vesta Clowser; Lois Dye; Wilma Seitz; Eleanor Vannoy; Lila Whiteman; and Marguerite Riffle.
He was a graduate of Elkins High School and was a Veteran of World War II, serving with the U. S. Army as Signal Corp Tech 4 in the European Theatre from August 1, 1942 until December 26, 1945. He was a manager for Sears and Roebuck Company in Elkins and Sayre, PA, was the Owner and Operator of the former Martin – Snyder Hardware Company and later the Superintendent of the City of Elkins Wastewater Treatment Plant, retiring with twenty-nine years of service. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter # 1, at Elkins, was a member of the H. W. Daniel’s Post # 29, American Legion and the Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, serving many years on the Church council as well as on the WV – MD Synod Stewardship committee traveling to many congregations in Maryland and WV teaching stewardship. Willard enjoyed being involved in the family carpentry trade.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins on Monday, December 30, 2013 from 11:30 to 1:30 PM. On Monday at 1:30 PM, a funeral service will be conducted with Pastor Mark A. Epperson officiating. Interment will follow at the Mountain State Memorial Gardens at Gilman, WV, where the United States Army National Guard Honor Guard, the H. W. Daniel’s Post # 29, American Legion and the Tygarts Valley Post # 3647, Veterans of Foreign Wars will conduct full military honors. The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to Hospice Care Regional Inpatient Unit, 169 Diamond Street, Elkins, WV 26241.
