William A. Covey 1942-2022 Obituary
William Albert “Bill” Covey, age 79 years, a long-time resident of Virginia and a resident of Elkins, passed away Friday, February 11, 2022 in the Elkins Rehabilitation and Care Center. He was born August 14, 1942 at Washington, DC, a son of the late William Benjamin and Sadie Talbert Covey. On July 16, 1977 at Springfield, VA, he was married to Donna Marie Himes who survives. Also surviving are two sons, James Edward Covey and wife Karen of Langhorne, PA and Jason Himes Covey and wife Allison of Clifton, VA; three daughters, Beverly Ann Covey of Virginia Beach, VA, Carol Covey Bleck and husband Robert of Lakeridge, VA and Jennifer Covey Lamb and husband Andrew of Centreville, VA. One sister, Meryl Covey Stoll and husband Charles of Shadyside, MD; one brother-in-law, Thomas R. Himes of Culloden, WV; ten grandchildren, Christine, Amanda and husband Michael, Ryan, Robyn, Ashley, Hannah, Nathan, Violet, Anna and Grace and two great grandchildren, Harlee and Arianna. One niece, two nephews, four great nieces and great nephews also survive. In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his sister-in-law, D’Ann Himes and his former wife, Camilla Ann Hagan. Bill was Episcopalian by faith. Serving as an acolyte at St. Timothy’s in Washington, DC through his youth. His love for music started at an early age singing vocals and playing the drums for dance bands such as the Medallions, Lucky Seven and Three Penny in the Northern Virginia and Washington, DC areas. After his retirement from playing in the bands, he became known as the “Dashboard Drummer”, especially when Chicago was playing. He was a retired business owner having owned and operated Covey’s Carpets of Springfield, VA for forty years. Being very active in the industry, he worked with Technical Schools in Fairfax County, VA creating classes teaching floorcovering at all levels. Working with the Virginia Flooring Association and Maryland Flooring Association, he taught classes on the safe way to remove asbestos in flooring. Bill had a deep love for family and friends, his laugh and smile were infectious. You could always find him in the middle of his grandchildren doing his magic tricks. He was a member of the Springfield Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, the Virginia Floor Covering Association and was the founder of the Northern Virginia Floor Covering Association.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm Wednesday, February 23, 2022 from the Church of the Good Shepherd, 9350 Braddock Road, Burke, VA 22015 with the Reverend Charles R. Cowherd officiating. Interment will follow at 2:00 pm Wednesday in Fairfax Memorial Park, 9900 Braddock Road, Fairfax, VA 22032. A reception will follow at 3:00 pm Wednesday at the Church of the Good Shepherd where the family will be receiving friends. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, WV Chapter, 1299 Pineview Drive, Morgantown, WV 26505 in memory of Bill.
