Wood Carving for the Rest of US
Wood Carving Chisel Rack for Narrow Chisels
I need a way to organize my chisels so I could find the right chisel, and I need a way to protect my chisels sharp edges from getting dull and from accidently cutting me while I was looking for the right chisel
It seems logical that I would need multiple chisel racks, one for short chisels, one for long chisels and one for knives
The second chisel rack would be for Straight Handled chisels and would rest on the bottom of the rack, so I needed to pad the bottom to prevent damage to the cutting edges
My general chisels have a relatively narrow handles, so I placed the holes 3/4 inches apart to give me enough room to grab the chisels easily, but hold the maximum number of chisels
The size of the overall rack was determined by cutting a piece of pallet wood in 1/2
What materials/tools are required?
Recycled Pallet Wood – Actually, Any Wood will work OK
Glue – Yellow Carpenters Glue Works Well
9/16 Spade Drill Bit – A Drill bit 1/16 bigger than the Chisel Handle
Drill Press – Not Required, but helps alot
I started by marking the top board with a series of holes 3/4 inches apart, 3/4 inch from the side the board
I used Harbor Freight’s Mini Drill Press to Drill all the holes, 1/2 way thru from 1 side and finishing on the other side, to prevent tear out
the Prep work is done, After a little sanding, the chisel rack was ready for glue-up
I allowed the glue to dry and the rack was ready to use!
I was very happy with the finished chisel rack, the chisel did not touch the bottom and I had enough space for all my palm chisels with room for a few extra
