Woodrow C. “Woody” Smith Sr., 85, a resident of Route 1, Mill Creek, passed away Sunday, May 5, 2002, at his residence. He had been in failing health since Sept. 16, 2001.
Mr. Smith was born July 22, 1916, at Glady, a son of the late John Calvin and Flossie Olivia Propst Smith.
On Nov. 6, 1939, he was united in marriage to the former Mabel Nelma Sneed, who preceded him in death on Oct. 26, 1993.
He is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Delmas (Erma) Smarr of Statesville, N.C., Mrs. Earl (Wanda) Brisbin of Glenwillard, Pa., Mrs. Jack (Edith) Kerr of Glenfield, Pa., and Mrs. Bobby (Linda) Wamsley of Mill Creek; three sons, Woodrow C. Smith Jr. and wife, Wanda, of Valley Head, David Smith of Mill Creek, and Edgar Smith of Corapolis, Pa.; one brother, Roy Dixon Smith of Tampa, Fla.; two half brothers, Allen Smith of Belington, and John Smith of Circleville; 19 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death besides his parents and wife were two daughters, Esta Nelma Smith and Penny Ann Smith; two sisters, Evelyn Lambert and Mable Strawder; four half sisters, Madeline Taylor, Gloria Warner, Jane Cooper and Fern Smith; one brother, Basil Smith; and one grandchild.
He was a coal miner for 35 years and was last employed by Sweckley Valley Hospital where he was a pipe fitter in Sweckley, Pa. He was a Baptist and attended the Mill Creek Memorial Mission Church. He was a U.S. Marine, having served during World War II and was discharged on Oct. 31, 1945. He was a member of the H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion.
Friends will be received at F.E. Runner Funeral Home Chapel today after 6 p.m. On Wednesday, he will be moved to Mill Creek Memorial Mission Church for visitation from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m., the funeral hour. The Rev. Frank Long, pastor of the church, will officiate. Interment will follow in Brick Church Cemetery at Huttonsville, where the presentation of the American Flag will be made by H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion.
