Woodrow W. Calain 1917-2002 Obituary
Woodrow W. Calain, 85, a former resident of Bowden, died Tuesday, May 28, 2002, in the United States Soldier’s and Airmen’s Home in Washington, D.C.
He was born March 22, 1917, in Bowden, a son of the late J.W. “Bill” Calain and the late Beulah Dove Calain.
He had never married.
He is survived by one sister, Mrs. William (Eleanor) Tolbard, Frederick, Md.; one brother-in-law, Herman “Peck” Vance of Bowden; one sister-in-law, Ethel Calain of Bowden; and several nieces and nephews.
Also preceding him in death were three sisters, Virginia Phares, Betty Riggleman and Ruby Vance; and two brothers, H.O. “Mac” Calain and Russell Calain.
Mr. Calain was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army from 1935 until 1937 in Northern France and from 1939 until 1945 in the 702nd Tank Destroyer Battalion. He received numerous decorations including Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal, the African, Middle Eastern and European Service Medals and four Bronze Stars. He was an avid traveler visiting almost every state in the nation.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Arlington National Cemetery. Military rites will e accorded and interment will follow. This announcement is a courtesy of Tomblyn Funeral Home of Elkins.
