Early Zenith Radios used a separate power supply
Each power supply was made for a specific radio and were not interchangeable – this must have been an attempt to get the base cost down, as later they became standard
If you used commercial power, not only did you need a power supply, but you also needed a filter unit to surpress line noise – these became standard a few years later – a natural evolution of the radio
